Masi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Serego Alighieri Vaio Armaron 2011

Member Review by Eric Guido:

The nose showed black cherry, yet it was savory as salty cheeses and holiday spice filled the senses. On the palate, it showed a full body with cherry liquor, herbs, cedar and earth. A little sweet but wonderfully finessed with a long, slightly pepper filled finish.

Serego Alighieri:
Serego Alighieri is a wine produced by descendants of celebrated Medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri in the Valpolicella region of Italy. Serego Alighieri is a wine produced by descendants of celebrated Medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri in the Valpolicella region of Italy. The Alighieri family settled in Valpolicella after Dante was exiled from Florence for his political beliefs. The Seregos and Alighieris have been bound by marriage since the 1500s. In 1973, Count Pieralvise Serego and neighbor Sandro Boscaini went into partnership to produce wines from their vineyards, and producer Masi Agricola handled the bottling, marketing and technical aspects. In the 1970s, Valpolicella had been suffering from a reputation for cheap “plonk”, and the idea was to create something of far better quality than these mass-produced wines to once again elevate the perception of the region. The wines have since attracted many fans and continue to be produced adhering to strict quality standards. It is from their example that regional producers have an international market for their value-driven products.  Read less

The nose showed ripe black cherry, herbs, minerals and a hint of barnyard. I truly Italian wine in that earthy, wild and sexy way that makes so many of us fall in love with Italy. On the palate, it was smooth and burst with spicy cherry jam and cherry wood, dry but with velvety tannin, which promises over a decade of development. The finish lasted for over 30 seconds and added cocoa and aged wood to the canvas. I truly loved drinking this wine.

Been buying and drinking this since I had the good fortune to tour the Masi winery a few years ago. Don't know why but the Pennsylania Wine & Spirits shops are offering this for ONLY $49.99. It's internet special order only from their warehouse. So, if anyone reading this is close to Philly, here's your chance to pick get a $75.00 amarone for $49.99.

Displays aromas of prune and bitter cherry, with hints of flowers and cocoa. Full-bodied, relaxed and balanced, with good fruit, well-integrated tannins and a focused finish of cocoa and mineral. The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vaio Armaron is the most refined of these new releases from Masi. Here the tannins are particularly elegant, while the fruit shows gorgeous delineation and nuance, all qualities typical of the vintage. Sup... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
