Pretty blueberry and cherry aromas on the nose, with lovely intensity. Full-bodied, round and juicy, with loads of fruit and a soft, caressing palate. Long finish. So good now. Drink now through 2018.
The entry-level 2005 Amarone Classico della Valpolicella Costasera is made in a fairly straightforward, fresh style, with perfumed bright red fruit supported by silky tannins. This harmonious red offers excellent depth and lovely balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015. Masi is one of Veneto-s most historic houses. I was pleasantly surprised by this string set of wines, which far outpaces last year-s offerings.
Costasera, one of Masi's most popular expressions of Amarone, can be depended on for its consistent quality year after year. This vintage offers concentrated color and pretty notes of toasted nut backed by cherry, blackberry and mesquite wood. The wine's flavors are bright and fresh, the mouthfeel is clean and polished.
The 2003 Amarone Classico Costasera presents a brooding nose along with notes of tobacco, earthiness, smoke and dark fruit that flow from the glass. It offers excellent length on the palate although the tannins could use a little more polish. This full-bodied rustic Amarone should drink well over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2013.
Amarone Costasera is the perfect choice for those who are not already familiar with this unique category of Italian wine. The wine is extremely balanced and well integrated with elegant tones of ripe berry fruit and spice. It also promises to pair with beef, lamb or pork.
