Mascarello Guiseppe Barolo Monprivato 2005 - 08/09/10

Woodsy on the nose with big soil tones, really hard smelling mineral water notes as well over lightly smoky fresh fruit. - Melon fruit up front in a slightly fleshy feeling wine with integrated acids and hard but not dry tannins. There is a nice core of round fruit on the mid-palate with spice and herb tones coming to the fore on the backend. The wine gains depth and volume with air and the tannins do become somewhat more prominent coming to dominate the moderately long finish. 92pts

Mascarello Guiseppe Barolo Monprivato 2005 - 04/07/10

A bit funky and dirty at first, then turning very floral with a slight gamey edge and roasted nuances to the sour fruit. With air this gains a wonderfully clear and precise rose petal tone and deep notes of mineral water. On the palate this is deceptively light and soft with sweet raspberry fruit up front balanced by ripe tannins and supporting acids. There’s a touch of chalky minerality on the mid-palate and some sweet anise and orange skin tones that resonate on the long, aromatic finish. You have to think about this a bit to really get it at this point but the balance and inner mouth perfume bode well for the future. 91pts
