Mascarello Giuseppe e Figlio Barolo Monprivato(2001)

Opened and decanted and poured back into open botlle 3 hours prior to dinner. Expected and wished for an old style barolo with gasoline and road tar among the scents and flavors. Surprised how soft and light this wine was from a top vintage and an old style producer. A nice wine, light cherry in color with a nose of truffle, spice and cherry. Nice sour cherry flavor intermixed with some sweetness of plum and licorice. No tannin to speak of.

Medium red. The 2001 Monprivato represents the highest level of elegance, with a captivating nose of roses, tar, and licorice, followed by layers of sweet dark fruit and minerals that evolved in a never-ending counterpoint of aromas and sensations, with much depth, precision, and freshness on the finish. Everything is perfectly in balance here - still my guess is that this great wine is showing only a hint of its potential. One of the finest Monprivatos in recent memory and a wine no one who is passionate about Barolo should be without.

Unbelievably delicious. It's been a while since I had this one, but I remember being floored by it. I've never had a Barolo that I haven't loved.
