Mascarello Giuseppe Barolo Santo Stefano 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"The wine's high quality and elegance owes much to the elevated single SantoStefano vineyard, located in the Monforte d'Alba hamlet of Perno, with its deepiron-rich marl and sandstone soils. Sage and red cherry fruit fruit aromaspepper the very fine nose, while the palate continues in this vein, being veryrefined, suave, woven with the subtlest of structure and great breed; in factsuch is the wine's race and vineyard resonance that it reminds one more ofNebbiolo than Barbera. Very senior...drinking now and over the next 5 years.Excellent with any wild mushroom dish." (David Berry Green - BBR Buyer)

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. Cherry and earthy nose. Rich fruits and some earth in the mouth - very nice. Softy tannins, but overall very smooth. Drunk as part of a 12 course tasting menu at WD50. Paired with french onion soup and then surf clams

The 2005 Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno reveals a pretty core of dark fruit herbs and spices in a medium-bodied style. This round harmonious Barolo should drink nicely with a minimum of cellaring. The integrity of the fruit and the inner perfume of the 2005 are gorgeous and in this vintage the wine shows none of the angular edges that are present at times. With air the wine gains volume and comes together very nicely. This is a gorgeous and very pure Santo Stefano from Mauro Mascarello. Antici

Good deep red. Black fruits raspberry licorice and wild herbs on the nose complicated by coffee and mocha. Sweet but densely packed and powerful in a rather masculine style. The licorice and dark fruit flavors could be a bit more pristine but the finish features tannins that Mascarello describes as less hard than those of the 2006. He picked these vines after the rains as the grapes still needed time to ripen. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
