Mascarello Dolcetto d'Alba 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

89 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): (bottled in July, along with the 2009 Barbera and the 2008 Barolo): Medium bright red. Very primary aromas of black cherry, minerals, licorice, flowers and leather. Juicy and penetrating, with medicinal black cherry flavor intensified by strong acidity. 'Lighter than the 2009 dolcetto, and good for everyday drinking,' noted Maria-Teresa Mascarelo. This very pure wine grew on me. (Oct/Nov 2011)

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello:

Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. This show off a fine lipstick scented nose, waxy and rosy with a fine grassy notes accenting it’s red fruit. Dusty peppercorn notes appear early on the smooth palate, which is joined by mineral red berry fruit that shows real, cut on the palate. This is perfumed in the mouth with bright acids, succulent red berry fruit, and a hint of spice on the backend. The finish is fairly long with plenty of black spice, tense in a very precise and detailed presentation. 91pts

The nose showed crushed blackberry, floral notes, wild herbs and earth with a rustic twist. On the palate, it was medium bodied with plush blackberry fruits and a bit of tart citrus, which coated the senses and lasted through the long finish. The wine's structure could be felt in the close as hints of tannin clung to the palate.
