Mascarello Bartolo Barolo 1958

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

While the Giuseppe was so spicy and fresh on the nose after opening this took a decidely different tact. Opening with typical notes of soy, bleached bones, sweet licorice, rotting vegetables and boiled pigs feet this seemed much less about the fruit and more about the elevage. In the mouth there was more to this than the giuseppe with a greater note of sweetness, a hint of tannin still in evidence and ripe round acids offering a softer, rounder mouthfeel. The wine feels a bit more resolved and lacks the freshness and brightness of the giuseppe though the finish offers a lovely melange of spice notes and hints of fruit appear on the very long finish. This really evolved and by the time it came around again the nose offered up a touch of gamy ass but so many scents popped out and added depth and complexity. Bitter licorice, ash, chalk, gunpowder, cactus leaves, slightly bretty and quite peppery with exotic spice notes of green cardamom, another great nose but just a shade less precise than the Giuseppe. In the mouth this is broader with a sense of dpeth and richness the giuseppe lacked. It is a bit more languid than the Giuseppe and lacks that wines linear freshness but offers a great layered texture. I regret comparing this wine to the previous wine so much for the description of this can only suffer but between enjoying the wines, discussing the wines, and attending to dinner I was only able to record so much for each wine. This, while excellent, was not in the same class as the Giuseppe tonight.

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello:
Since time immemorial Nebbiolo has been the most highly-prized vine and the wine-growing emblem of Alba and the Langa, and when it is matched with a great wine-making terroir it is capable of expressing itself at sublime levels in wines of remarkable personality, intense bouquet, great smooth tannins, and outstanding possibilities of evolution and resistance over time. The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for more than a century and a half, first as farmers running the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra for the marchesa Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo, and then on their own property since the late 1800s. This looked like that bottle of peach snapple that's been rolling about the back seat of your car for the past 2 years. It didn't taste quite as good though. Alcohol, bitterness, acidity, and a green herbal thing. Spit quickly. Oh I hope my next bottle is better.
