What to Expect

Grenache is the main grape in many Rhone blends and most Cotes du Rhone and Chateaunuef-du-pape. It's a grape that yields soft, lightly colored yet full wines endowed with deep notes of strawberry and raspberry. While not prone to producing particularly rich or complex wines in France, Grenache is one of the world's most widely-planted grapes, producing unique expression where ever it is planted. It is particularly common in Spain as Garnacha, and Sardinia, as Canonnau,

Winemakers Notes

The 2004 Costers de Vinas Viejas is 50% Carinena, 48% Garnacha, and 2% Merlot aged for 16 months in new French oak. Deep purple, the aromas are other-worldly with truffle, tar, graphite, kirsch, and wild blueberry among the array of scents leaping from the glass. Flamboyant and opulent, the wine has remarkable richness and depth of flavor leading to a 60-second finish.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 128, September/October 2006 ($115) Inky ruby. Room-filling aromas of fresh raspberry, strawberry jam, sandalwood, potpourri, yellow rose and minerals, with hints of white pepper and exotic tobacco. Incredibly sweet and lush, the deep, powerful red fruit flavors brightly accented by fresh acidity and tangy minerality. Finishes with fully absorbed tannins, impeccable balance and superb purity and intensity. Another outstanding wine from this exceptional vintage. (European Cellars, Charlotte, NC)
