Mas de Guiot Cabernet-Syrah Blend Vin de Pays du Gard Cabernet/Syrah 2008

Member Review by mwid625:

Delicious rich nose with maple syrup and caramelized red fruit. This wine has grip in the mouth, but is pleasant with vegetable note, particularly green bell pepper.

I had a great experience with this wine. Normally my palate is not accustomed to French wine, but with this one I now can appreciate it. From the southern Rhone, it has a beautiful burgundy color with red velvet around the rim. The nose has humble dark fruits. Earthy in tannin and rich in acidity, with a long yet delicate finish. This under-$15 bottle proves that wines don’t need to be high priced. Profitez de ce vin élégant mes amis. (Enjoy this elegant wine, my friends.)

The 1,000 cases of 1997 Cuvée Prestige Vin de Pays du Gard (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah that spends time in both new oak and one-year old barrels) were selected for the American marketplace. The dark ruby/garnet color offers a bouquet of spice box, cedar, and cassis, which is followed by a wine with wonderful density, medium to full body, and outstanding sweet fruit. It is further characterized by gobs of glycerin and ripe tannin in the heady (alcoholic) finish. Although it is not fruit-driven, it will ultimately be more complex and should last for 5-7 years.

The 2008 Mas de Guiot Vin de Pays Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah (60% and 40% respectively, aged in barriques) reveals plenty of black fruits, some of the vintagersquo;s austerity, but good depth, richness and overall equilibrium. Drink this attractive, well-made 2008 over the next 3ndash;4 years.
