Food Pairings for Martinelli Zinfandel Russian River Valley Jackass Vineyard
I've been a big fan of Martinelli for several years and was waiting for an opportunity to give this a try. We popped it open last weekend and unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. Appearance was fine but nose was not appealing (had a scent of damp clothing that has been left in the dryer too long). Flavors of licorice and jam. Very heavy in the mouth and the acidity (what little there was) was not in balance with the rest of the wine. Being such a big fan of G&L and their other Zins I was quite surprised. We let it stand hoping it would open up and evolve but no luck. Maybe it was just a bad bottle.

A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 1997 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard 750ml
The 1997 Zinfandel Jackass Hill Vineyard is a massive totally dry wine that came in at 17.5% alcohol and was bottled unfiltered. Dense and full-bodied it represents Zinfandel in its most concentrated form. Its singular style unctuous texture and fabulously concentrated flavors make for an unforgettable tasting experience. While not for everybody it is the quintessential powerhouse Zinfandel made from tiny yields a phenomenal vineyard site and impeccable winemaking. Its characteristics are intense - jammy black cherries plums prunes dried herbs licorice chocolate and coffee. This wine is best drunk in its exuberant youthfulness but I suspect it will age well beyond a decade. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Jackass Vineyard was planted in the late 1800’s in the splendid Russian River Valley. This eight acre vineyard thrives on a steep rolling hillside which surrounds the west side of the Jackass Hill Vineyard. The old head pruned vines are farmed much the same way as they were a century ago; without the use of trellising, irrigation, or pesticides. The vines produce a large crop load for being 100 years old, about three tons per acre, and the fruit is thinned to insure more concentrated flavor in the berries.Tasting NotesThe 2010 Jackass Vineyard Zinfandel has aromas of cherry pit, strawberries and flinty characteristics. Flavors include blackberry, anise, and clove spice with roasted figs.
