Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Hill(1997)

the Martinellis made their reputation with their extraordinary Zinfandels, and the newest of the cuvees is the Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa. The 1997 is a blockbuster, with deep ruby/purple color and a big, sweet nose of ripe figs, strawberry and cherry jam, mincemeat, and peppery spices. It is full-bodied, heady, opulent, and ideal for drinking over the next 5-7 years, although I suspect it will last a lot longer. The finished alcohol is 16.90%.

Even deeper ruby. Highly complex aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, pepper and mellow wood tones. Thick and very rich, with compelling ripeness and gentle but adequate acidity. More complex than the above, but less fruit-driven. Also more tannic, but the tannins are mellow. Very long, layered aftertaste. I was not able to taste the Jackass Hill zin, which had not yet been bottled.
