Martinelli Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2012 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa (503 cases; 17.3% alcohol) is made from the Jackass Hill clone of Zinfandel. This used to be the vineyard where the Martinellis made one of the two or three finest dry Gewurztraminers in Northern California. However, it’s planted with Zinfandel now, and we should be thankful for that. This deep plum/ruby-hued 2012 boasts fabulous fruit along with notes of jammy kirsch liqueur intertwined with licorice, sandalwood, Provençal herbs, pepper and that smoked meat/barbecue complexity. Full-bodied and unctuously textured, it should drink beautifully for 8-10 years, but will keep a lot longer since the alcohol will stabilize it for many years...93" WA 12/14

Floral boysenberry and sassafras aromas lead to soft, superripe blueberry and spicy caramel flavors. Drink now through 2017.

Inky purple. High-pitched, flamboyant aromas of cherry, black raspberry and potpourri. Suave and sweet in the mouth, offering firm-edged flavors of dark berries, cherry-cola and minerals. Silky tannins come on late and fold smoothly into the wine's lush fruit. Impressively fresh and vibrant zin, with excellent intensity, focus and closing persistence.

Unapologetically ripe and bold, yet impressive for its core of tannins and complex flavors. Offers notes of berry cobbler, licorice, mineral and spicy caramel. Drink now through 2021.

The 2011 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa is also made from the Jackass and Jackass Hill clones. It offers notes of figs, loamy soil, roasted herbs, underbrush, sweet black currant and black cherry jam, and a full-bodied, mouth-saturating level of fruit and glycerin. It, too, should drink well for 3–4 years.
