Martin Ray Stag's Leap District Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for twenty-six months in French oak- 35 percent in new oak barrels and 65 percent is 1-4 year old barrels. A lively, purple red color leads you to a soft entry of the ripe fruit forward structure of this wine. Abundant aromas of cherry, cedar and hints of earth will seduce and satisfy your palate, which continues with flavors of lots of cherry and black fruits. The youthful, rich Cab flavor is smooth with creamy oak flavors leading to a soft, easy finish.

This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist. If you are offered a tour of the old barns, gleefully accept the invitation. The Martin Ray Winery buildings would make a great movie locale. Check out the dozen old concrete vats. Each vat holds 33,000 gallons! Martin Ray Winery production began here in 2003. 9 varietals and some bulk wine blends are made. The reserve wines are silky smooth, loaded with flavor. Prices are very reasonable for these high quality wines. Read less

Sweet tarragon-inflected aromas of raspberry coulis greet the nose along with allspice, hazelnut and cherry accents. Very Stag's Leap in style with masses of sweet, red fruit in a smooth slightly low acid style that shows off very ripe, plush tannins. There's lovely cherry, red plum and dried cranberry flavors here that are nicely framed with coffee, cream and caramel notes from well judged oak. The texture is supple and smooth, nothing sticking out and nothing missing right through the moderately long red fruit, coffee, cream and caramel-tinged finish that ends with a touch of red hots. 91pts
