Martin Ray Pinot Gris 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A touch leesy/floral on the nose, with dusty, talc minerals, a touch of white pepper and faint pear fruit. This is light and taut in the mouth with splendid acidity and somewhat lean fruit buffered with an edge of creaminess that creates real tension in the mouth. The fruit is earthy and lightly spicy, recalling slight unripe pear peelings with that fine, hard underlining acidity that drives the finish, which adds a hint of honeycomb complexity on the moderately long finish. This has a fine insinuation of classic Pinot Grigio bitterness, but adds just a touch of seasoning here and some length on the finish. 90pts

Martin Ray Winery started in Saratoga California in the WW2 era. Martin Ray was a viticulture student of Paul Masson. This location was established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery. This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist. If you are offered a tour of the old barns, gleefully accept the invitation. The Martin Ray Winery buildings would make a great movie locale. Check out the dozen old concrete vats. Each vat holds 33,000 gallons! Martin Ray Winery production began here in 2003. 9 varietals and some bulk wine blends are made. The reserve wines are silky smooth, loaded with flavor. Prices are very reasonable for these high quality wines. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Not a bad pinot gris for the price. Decent acidity with lemon and green apple although a bit light and thin.

Very little here of substance (in fact, the wine is almost clear!), but still refreshing on a hot day. I feel the heat more than any crisp, light notes, even though it's not too hot.

The nose is a bit peachy and candy-like, which belies some of the complexities in the palate. Nice acidic body w/ a coconut oiliness, mineral finish that has good length. Hints of melon.

Really nice! Picked this one based on its ratings for a special weekend and was not disappointed. Another A+ for the ABC…Anything But Chardonnay fans. This one is from Mendocino County and has a nice full mouthfeel from its partial aging in French oak barrels. Flavors are very clean with peach and a touch of lime with vanilla flavors on a long satisfying finish. Seek this one out and buy a few, one for now and one for your own special occasion.
