Martin Ray Diamond Mountain Cabernet 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a tightly wound wine with a rich, concentrated structure and layers of well-integrated flavors. Aromas and flavors of cherries, black currants and plums are accented by hints of vanilla oak that lead to a long, rich finish. Pair our elegant Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon with your favorite hearty beef stew, rib roast or roast prime rib with peppercorns.

This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist. If you are offered a tour of the old barns, gleefully accept the invitation. The Martin Ray Winery buildings would make a great movie locale. Check out the dozen old concrete vats. Each vat holds 33,000 gallons! Martin Ray Winery production began here in 2003. 9 varietals and some bulk wine blends are made. The reserve wines are silky smooth, loaded with flavor. Prices are very reasonable for these high quality wines. Read less

The shining jewel of the Martin Ray Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons, Diamond Mountain is special spot in Napa Valley. The vineyards (which were originally planted in 1895) are nestled on the northeastern slope of the mountain, where mornings are typically brisk and fog-free, while northwesterly winds continually cool the vineyard throughout the long growing season. This unique mountain vineyard site provides a variety of nutrient-rich soils, superior exposure to sunlight and evening cooling for small, intensely flavored berries and fragrant, flavorful wines. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine was aged 30 months in French oak barrels. It won a Double Gold Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, 91 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 92 points from Wine & Spirits who said "Grown at the Constant–Diamond Mountain Vineyard rising to 2,121 feet, this is a classical Diamond Mountain cabernet at a great price. The relative coolness of the site creates a floral buzz in the fruit, lifting the wine out of its powerful tannins. It’s tarry and intense, balanced more toward its tannins at the moment, suited to several years of bottle age."
