Martin Ray Chardonnay 2017

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Warm, thick fruit forward aromas of baked apple, pear and vanilla caramel with some lemon hiding against the spice. This is a bit thin in the mouth but bursting with acidity, candied lemon drop notes towards the front of the palate, cream and butter towards the back and a warm stone fruit blend of peach and dried apricot welling up at the finish.

Martin Ray Winery started in Saratoga California in the WW2 era. Martin Ray was a viticulture student of Paul Masson. This location was established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery. This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist. If you are offered a tour of the old barns, gleefully accept the invitation. The Martin Ray Winery buildings would make a great movie locale. Check out the dozen old concrete vats. Each vat holds 33,000 gallons! Martin Ray Winery production began here in 2003. 9 varietals and some bulk wine blends are made. The reserve wines are silky smooth, loaded with flavor. Prices are very reasonable for these high quality wines. Read less

Clear and pale in the glass. "Fruity" nose. Very much fruit forward wine--apple, kiwi, table grapes. This wine definitely has a sweet characteristic. If it had some acid, I might be more enthusiastic about this wine. It's a very easy drinking wine, but there is no sophistication, here. We had it with grilled chicken breast, last night. Maybe that wasn't the best match for me. US$13.99 at Total Wines.

Wine Tasting NotesOur Russian River Valley Chardonnay begins with rich aromas, highlighted by fresh peaches, apple and vanilla. The wines superior structure and balance has a backbone of crisp apple, peach and creamy vanilla flavors that continue flawlessly on to a ripe and elegant finish. A succulent dish of fresh lobster tails with a rich butter sauce would be an excellent match for our Chardonnay.
