Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Courtney Benham 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is crushed in small batches to open-top tanks, 3 day cold-soak, followed by a 10 day fermentation then pressed to barrels and aged for 16 months in French & American oak. Our Cabernet Sauvignon is a luxurious wine with a rich, concentrated structure. Enticing aromas and flavors of sumptuous cherries and ripe plums are accented with hints of vanilla oak and spice, which lead to a full fruit finish with moderate tannins.

Martin Ray Winery started in Saratoga California in the WW2 era. Martin Ray was a viticulture student of Paul Masson. This location was established in 1881 as the Twin Fir Winery. This historic site is distinguished as the oldest winery in continuous operation in Sonoma County and one of the oldest wineries in California. Some of the old grape crush barns from the original days still exist. If you are offered a tour of the old barns, gleefully accept the invitation. The Martin Ray Winery buildings would make a great movie locale. Check out the dozen old concrete vats. Each vat holds 33,000 gallons! Martin Ray Winery production began here in 2003. 9 varietals and some bulk wine blends are made. The reserve wines are silky smooth, loaded with flavor. Prices are very reasonable for these high quality wines. Read less

Gentle on the nose with an early meaty note, followed by a nice blend of balanced tarragon, wet clay, Middle Eastern spice, eucalyptus and spiced cherry aromas. Rather precise and focused on the palate with attractively fresh blackcurrant and black cherry fruit early on that are joined by a little wood spice and gentle earth notes on the mid palate. The finish is bright and juicy with stiff if fine grained tannins and a nice rush of wild raspberry fruit accenting red plummy fruit. There's a nice edge of tension to this wine, with fruit that is pleasantly ripe. 89pts

Nice dark, clear color. "Viney" on the nose. Pleasant hint of blackberry fruit on the tip of the tongue. Some tartness in the back of the palate, but nothing really noticeable. Slight tannic dryness, but, again, nothing big. This is definintely from Valley floor fruit. I find it to have a pleasant, lingering finish. US$9.99 at Total WIne.

Black soil nose, with menthol. Body is pretty tannic, a little bit harsh with the bitterness and heat. Medicinal finish.
