Martin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

This Cabernet Sauvignon from Dry Creek Valley is redolent with aromas and flavors of blackberry, juicy red cherry, and fresh toasty oak. The hillside vineyard where it is grown is maturing nicely and produces fruit leading to a full-bodied, well-balanced wine that has a thick textured palate that echoes fresh fruit flavors. Velvety firm tannins lead to a long, alluring finish. This is truly a lovely wine that will age very well in cellar or is very drinkable now.

MARTIN ESTATE produces an ultra premium balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. Not a cookie cutter wine that followes the herd, this is a wine for people that enjoy the taste of fruit versus heavy oak and high alcohol. The massive pre-prohibition Chateau was built in 1887 by pioneer vintner Henry H. Harris. The winery, which is not open to the public,  is located in Block B of the original Caymus Land Grant in the heart of Napa Valley's famous Rutherford Appellation. Martin Estate wines are estate grown, produced and bottled, and releases are limited to the yield of the eight acre first growth Puerta Dorada Vineyard that surrounds the Estate. Award winning winemaker Aaron Pott is in charge of the state of the art winery and vineyard. The wines are terroir driven, reflecting the sense of place where they originated. A Gold Medal Wine Club Platinum selection. Since the first vintage in 2000, Martin Estate has earned itself a position among the top California Cabernet producers, and this engaging, flavor-packed current release makes it easy to see why. The extremely limited production 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a restrained elegance while still delivering the power and finesse we’ve grown to love from Napa Valley’s Rutherford wineries and vineyards. Although this gem was not sent out for review, the reputation alone of the winery and vineyard sets this Cabernet on a pedestal all its own. The wine’s soft-edged but focused aromas of sweet cherry, black currants and earthy “Rutherford dust” lead into bright fruit flavors, vanilla toffee notes, and subtle hints of cassis and tobacco spice. A soft, balanced mouthfeel makes it delightfully food-friendly and its distinctive flavor profile is true to its Rutherford origin. Try pairing the 2004 Martin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with filet mignon, braised short ribs, or pork tenderloin with a rich sauce. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy now until 2015.

This Martin Estate Cabernet is packed with bramble and spice notes. The winery was originally built by pioneer vintner Henry H. Harris in 1887 and purchased by the Martin family in 1996. This is a single-vineyard, estate-grown wine that will compliment grilled meats and hearty stews.
