In 1880, Paolo Pellegrino, a local politician and vineyard owner founded a winery in the town of Marsala in Sicily, Italy, for the production of Marsala, a fortified wine that was enjoying success with the Victorians throughout the British Empire. Today the Company is still family owned and managed and has expanded to become the market leader. Only white grapes can be used for the production of Marsala (Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia and Damaschino) with the exception of Ruby Marsala. The grapes are pressed, fermented and boiled must called “Calamich”, is added together with grape spirits to make marsala. The yound wine is then left to mature in large cherry-wood barrels. By law, Marsala Superiore requires 2 years ageing. Pellegrino’s Marsala is appreciated and enjoyed in every corner of the world, and can be served chilled as aperitifs, or in cocktails, at room temperature as dessert wines, as a refined accompaniment to strong cheese or as a vital part in many fine recipes. Grapes : 40% Grillo, 40% Cataratto and 30% Inzolia Region : Italy / Sicily / Marsala Superiore DOC Notes : Rich, smooth and nutty with tones of toffee and dried fruit in the background. Serve : Slightly chilled at 8-10c as an aperitif, with desserts such or with tarts, flans, pastries, shortcake biscuits and other savoury desserts. ABV : 18% Suitable for Vegetarians
