Just as stunning is the 2001 Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Middleton and Padthaway, which spent 12 months in new American oak. It exhibits notes of blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of licorice, pepper, and chocolate. Opulent, full-bodied, and viscous, with great intensity, superb purity, and a layered, seamless personality, it, like its siblings, is meant to be drunk young, but will age surprisingly well given its intensity. Frankly, the red offerings taste like $50 wines.
The exciting, saturated inky purple-colored 2002 Shiraz reveals a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, vanilla, and a hint of figs. Opulent, voluptuous, and sexy, it is both flamboyant and immensely satisfying. This big, silky, flesh bomb should drink well for 3-4 years. For the price, it offers unbelievable value.
The ripe, juicy, fleshy 2003 Shiraz. Dark ruby/purple-colored, with blackberry, charcoal, and fig characteristics, this medium to full-bodied, potent, mouthfilling red can be enjoyed over the next 2-4 years.
This vintner consistently produces wines of prodigious results, and their Shiraz is no exception. Ripe aromas of blackberry and blueberry practically leap out of the glass, developing in intensity on the palate — balanced and hinting at smoke. The finish is drawn out to an impressive degree with a whisper of spice. An outstanding value; you’ll be the hit of the party when you bring the Marquis.
Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of dark berries, violet pastille, licorice and mace. Cool, nicely concentrated flavors of black raspberry and blackberry. Smooth, sweet, nicely balanced shiraz, with more verve than the cabernet. Finishes aromatic and persistent. You can easily spend twice the price of this wine for less satisfying shiraz from Australia.
