Marquis Philips Shiraz 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit off on the nose with both lactic and acetic accents to the bright, juniper-accented aromas of sweet black fruit, peach tea and grilled meats. Velvety and sweet in the mouth, with good freshness to the core of plummy fruit. This is fairly weighty and while it’s reasonably well-balanced, it is a monotone wine that finishes a bit abruptly. 86pts

Deep full body, lots of fruit, silky, molasses, liquorice. At a wine tasting of Syrahs (comparing Australian, Washington, and Rhone Valley), this was the favorite, and by far the cheapest. It's the perfect example of a value wine. (Not for the French inclined. Definitely not subtle.)

I really liked the berry qualities of this red. It was an easy drinking Shiraz that I hope to find again before it disappears.

Rating 88; This wine borders on a port wine in taste. Alcohol is 16%!!! it still has a remaining sweetness that borders on Portwine. The nose is Poerfull with berries and raisins. I never had a wine like this. Some of the guest hated it some liked it. It showed best when it was consumed with ice cream. The sweet taste of icecream made the wine taste almost dry. Get one and try it yourself

My favorite bargain red - and lower in price this year than last! This is possibly my favorite vintage yet. Amazing depth and density of fruit for any wine, much less one in this price range. Lip-smacking blackberry and black raspberry fruit - like a black raspberry pie - on top of subtle chocolate, vanilla, and roasted herb flavors. Very rich and satisfying texture, and the fruit is deep enough to basically bury the 16% alcohol. I don't know how they succeed in making a wine this good and getting it all the way from Australia to the U.S. for this price, but it is multiple-case-worthy.

Upon opening I noted the aroma of prunes and was a little worried. But upon sipping it was very fruity with nice complexity. The high alcohol content (16%) paired well with food. I look forward to enjoying it with a nice steak on day two.

The 2008 Marquis Philips Shiraz Integrity (the first since 2003) is also a behemoth at 17.8% alcohol. Black in color, it offers up a superb nose of Asian spices, incense, bacon, lavender, blackberry, and blueberry. Full-bodied, voluptuous, packed and... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. 91 Points - The Wine Advocate "The 2008 Shiraz offers up aromas of cigar box, damp earth, smoked meat, bacon, and blueberry. Packed with flavor on the palate, it is full-bodied, round, and altogether pleasure-bent. Drink it over the next 4-5 years."

Just as stunning is the 2001 Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Middleton and Padthaway, which spent 12 months in new American oak. It exhibits notes of blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of licorice, pepper, and chocolate. Opulent, full-bodied, and viscous, with great intensity, superb purity, and a layered, seamless personality, it, like its siblings, is meant to be drunk young, but will age surprisingly well given its intensity. Frankly, the red offerings taste like $50 wines.

Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of dark berries, violet pastille, licorice and mace. Cool, nicely concentrated flavors of black raspberry and blackberry. Smooth, sweet, nicely balanced shiraz, with more verve than the cabernet. Finishes aromatic and persistent. You can easily spend twice the price of this wine for less satisfying shiraz from Australia.

Ripe, dense and juicy; a real mouthful of dark berry, cherry, dusky spice and sweet oak flavors, mingling harmoniously on the lively finish. Best from 2005 through 2010.
