The upscale, more expensive as well as more prestigious Marquis Phillips' offerings include the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon S2. It boasts a deep purple color as well as a classic bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, and licorice aromas. Heady, dense and medium to full-bodied, with plenty of ripe tannin, it is an intense, powerful 2003. This big Cabernet is best consumed during its first decade of life.
The Cabernet companion to this new winery's "9," this is ripe, round and generous with its raspberry and cherry flavors, shaded with floral, peppery grace notes and wrapped in a layer of creamy oak. All those flavors return impressively on the well-formed finish. Best after 2004
The opaque purple-colored 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon S2 (100% Cabernet) was barrel-fermented in 100% new oak and aged in a combination of French and American barrels. It exhibits a spicy perfume of vanilla, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice, and cedar. Dense, opulent, expansive, and full-bodied, it is surprisingly fresh and well-delineated. I re-tasted this wine after it had been open for 24 hours and double decanted, and it revealed sweeter tannin as well as greater fruit intensity, an attribute that should serve these wines well in their aging process. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2017.
Rich, with a strong smoky note, almost acrid, over the currant and blueberry flavors, finishing with fine-grained tannins as the fruit lingers impressively against the smokiness. Best from 2007 through 2012.
Saturated full ruby, the color of syrah. Aromas of cassis, black licorice and tarry oak. Dense, concentrated and penetrating, with juicy, syrah-like flavors of cassis, black raspberry, pepper and meat. This offers lovely sweetness and concentration. Sweet and supple but not at all cloying. Shows good firm structure on the back end.
Ruby-red color. Fresh, high-pitched aromas of redcurrant, cassis and blackberry, with complicating notes of fresh tobacco and exotic chocolate. Fat and velvety, with a sweet blackberry liqueur flavor supported by silky tannins. Finishes round and gentle, with lovely clarity of dark berry fruit and impressive length.
