Winemaker's Notes:

A black-cherry coloured wine with slight violet hues. High aromatic intensity, with aromas of ripe dark fruit, fine smoked notes with toasted aromas coming through. On the palate it is meaty and crisp, with a presence of well-polished tannins. Moderate acidity, with a long, pleasant finish in which the oak can be detected more distinctly.

This fruit-forward wine based on grapes mostly from the Toro region represents a relatively new project from a venerable Rioja producer. With a few years behind the wines, the '04 is highly expressive and packed with bold character. The palate is lush, saturated and meaty, while the finish is smoky and big. This is a lot of wine for the money.

Marques de Riscal, now in its second century of winemaking in Rioja, is considered one of the country's top producers. This Tempranillo is soft yet structured, with hints of strawberry on the nose followed by plum and mocha flavors that suggest a hint of caramel. If you like wines that pack a lot of flavor, then go no further and see what Spain has to offer.

Ripe with fruit and sweet with oak, this jammy red offers cherry, berry, vanilla and spice flavors. But it has the structure for food and just enough acidity to keep it lively. Drink now through 2008.
