Marqués de Riscal Tempranillo Blend Rioja Reserva 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Marqués de Riscal, the oldest Rioja house, has for many years been a leading and pioneering company in the wine producing sector. As far back as 1858, it became the first winery in Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method, and in 1972 it was the first winery to promote the Rueda Designation of Origin, where it produced its famous Marqués de Riscal white wines. Marqués de Riscal sells its products in 80 countries and its wines enjoy the highest international distinctions as well as numerous awards and mentions in the media. Marqués de Riscal Reserva wines are predominantly made from grapes from Tempranillo vines over 15 years of age, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. Riscal Reservas spend around two years in American-oak casks, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. This 'Rioja Reserva' shows a dark cherry colour with good depth. Balsamic aromas with hints of ripe fruit on the nose and a fresh and light attack, with soft, rounded tannins. This Rioja is spicy and complex, the finish is persistent with subtle toasted oak character. It is elegant, fresh and easy to drink. Try with ham, mild cheeses, casseroles which are not too spicy, pulse dishes, poultry, red meat, grilled and roast meat.

Faint, sour cherries, with some wood shavings on the nose. Strong vanilla character on the palate with sour pomegranate, cherries, and mild oak. Light to medium in texture. Nice medium finish shows off its robust acidity. 90 points.

Bright ruby-red. Complex, aromatic bouquet of red berries, dried cherry, sassafras, tobacco and cedary oak. On the palate, dark fruits are joined by mounting vanilla and oak spice character. Packs a solid punch and finishes with very good spicy persistence.

Textbook Rioja reserva from a legendary label and a top vintage. Smells lightly baked and smooth, with leather, tobacco, raspberry and spice. Feels zesty, clean and pure, with reedy berry, tobacco and leathery baked plum flavors. Savory and smooth on the finish. Drink now through 2014.

A high scorer in our blind tasting, we found here everything we love about traditional-style Rioja: red currant, macerated cherry, roasted nuts, and dusty saddle leather. Well-balanced and round, with fantastic length. Fans of old world wine: donrsquo;t miss this great value in Rioja.

Bright, deep red. Aromatic, suave nose combines plum, currant, nuts, tobacco and sweet oak spices. Dense, silky and fresh, with a mineral component contributing to the winersquo;s clarity of flavor. A snappy, classic Rioja with excellent length. Very strong for the vintage.

Er hat eine rubinrote Farbe mit dunkleren Schattierungen. Traditionelles Bukett der Rioja Alavesa mit Akzenten von Vanille und getoastetem Eichenholz, komplexes Aroma. Eindruck von Frische in ausgewogener Kombination mit grosser Weichheit im Abgang.

Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja’s legendary estates. In 1858 Herederos de Marqués de Riscal became the first winery in the Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method of slow fermentation and careful blending. A classic Rioja wine, the Marqués de Riscal Reserva is 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and Mazuelo from vines more than 15 years old. A hand selection and triage is done as the grapes come in to the winery and only the best grapes of the vintage are selected for use in the Reserva. After slow, temperature controlled fermentation that brings deep color and extract, the wine spends approximately two years in American oak barrels, creating a fine structure and added complexity. The Wine Advocate scored this wine 90 points saying "The 2005 Reserva is medium purple-colored with an excellent nose of cedar, Asian spices, violets, balsamic, and black cherry. Dense and layered on the palate, it is a powerful offering from an excellent vintage that will benefit from another 5-7 years of cellaring and which should drink well through 2030. It is a great value as well as an ideal introduction to traditional Rioja."

Das Aroma ist von balsamischen Noten geprägt, Eichenwürze und Kirschfrucht halten sich die Waage. Am Gaumen gutes Tannin: fest, aber reif und schmackhaft. Auch hier viel Würze und rote Steinfrüchte mit Kräuternuancen, sehr harmonische Weinsäure. Das Finale ist geprägt von dunklen Röstaromen und Kirschfrucht. Ein kraftvoller Klassiker, auf den man sich verlassen kann.

Cherry-red colour with good robe. Spicy, balsamic aromas of great complexity, with notes of ripe dark berries and light toasted nuances. On the palate it is full and tasty, with good structure and rounded, elegant tannins. The finish is long and fresh, with a slight reminder of the fine oak.

<p>This wine is a blend of hand-selected 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano and Mazeulo. Aged in American oak barrels for about two years. Complex and dark-purple in color.</p>
