Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

"A sleek texture delivers bright cherry and red plum flavors, with leafy, licorice and vanilla notes. Firm tannins and racy acidity give this focus. A fresh and energetic red." --The Wine Spectator*Wine Spectator rated: 91 pts.*

Marques de Murrieta:
Marques de Murrieta is a family business in an almost "romantic" sense of the world. This project is a way of life, where is impossible to cut the ties that bind our wines and our family.

Marques de Murrieta is named after Luciano de Murrieta, one of the founding fathers of modern Rioja winemaking, who established the estate in 1852. Today V. Dalmau Cebrian-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, leads the family-owned company. With a vision of innovation and respect for tradition, Marques de Murrieta is rooted in strong, historical fundamentals that shape the vision and philosophy of this iconic Spanish brand. The winery is near the southern tip of the Rioja Alta in the middle of the beautiful Ygay Estate, a unique 740-acre vineyard that guarantees complete control over the grape source and is the key to the quality and style of Marques de Murrieta wines. The Wine Advocate scored it 91 points saying "The 2011 Rioja Reserva, their volume red, is a blend of 89% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo, 4% Graciano and 2% Garnacha Tinta from a diversity of plots in the Ygay Estate. The different varieties fermented separately in stainless steel vats. It matured in 225-liter American oak barrels for some 20 months, at least during eight months in new oak. The wine very clearly shows much riper fruit than the 2012; it is great to see the wine reflecting the much warmer conditions of the harvest. It has a classical profile with an important role of the American oak. The palate is polished and sleek, with very fine tannins and a long finish... In the context of the new Rosé and the old white that has just been released, the price here looks unreal." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine also gave it 91 saying "Cherry, blackberry and baking-spice aromas are classic for this winery and the Rioja region. Bright, elegant and just plush enough on the palate, this tastes of plum, spiced berry fruits and mocha. A composed, dry, loamy feeling finish isn’t pushy or demanding. Drink this easygoer through 2021."

The winery is near the southern tip of the Rioja Alta in the middle of the beautiful Ygay Estate, a unique 740-acre vineyard that guarantees complete control over the grape source and is the key to the quality and style of Marques de Murrieta wines. This 2008 is a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo and 2% Graciano all from the Ygay estate vineyard. The wine was aged 18 months in American oak barrels and 24 months in bottle. The Wine Advocate scored it 91 points saying "The 2008 Reserva is a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha Tinta, 4% Mazuelo and 2% Graciano from their own vineyards, which were hand-harvested between October 2 and 27. The grapes, which are selected from different plots to display the character of Ygay, fermented in inox vats and the wine aged for eighteen months in American oak barrels, eight of them in new barrels and the rest in used ones. It also matured in bottle for two years before being put on the market. An impressive 1.5 million bottles were produced. It has strong balsamic notes of incense, smoked meat, leather, fennel and cherries, which make it feel very Rioja. The palate is medium-bodied, balanced, with great acidity and freshness. A serious vintage of Murrieta Reserva that represents great balance between tradition and modernity. Drink 2014-2028."
