What to Expect

The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world's finest, and most long lived wines: Rioja. Rioja's renaissance, in the latter half of the 19th century, was a direct result of the phyloxera bug that decimated vineyards around the globe. While English merchants came to Rioja to replace their French imports, the wines here actually have much more in common with Chianti. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti's Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to its raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha, the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma, but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes to an even more obvious imprint. While the Spaniards have traditionally been fans of the strong vanilla and coconut components that American oak barrels have contributed to Rioja, more and more producers have turned to French oak favoring its more subtle spice tones. Rioja continues to undergo extended aging in barrel with Reserva and Gran Reserva bottlings, representing a producer's highest achievement, spending a minimum of 3 of 5 years respectively in the producer's cellar.

Winemakers Notes

Recommended foods: all red meats and cured ham, as well as grilled fish and dishes with rich sauces.

Editorial Reviews

Hot rocks, candied licorice and smoky tobacco dominate the upright and focused nose that gains a touch of funk with notes of wet sneakers, fur, flowers, a minor matchstick tone, and cocoa, toast, caramel oak notes. In the mouth this is very smooth and easy with the richness to back it up. There is good balancing acid and nice, crisp tannins that give this lean yet ripe wine a refreshing feel up front that turns a bit heavy on the backend that is dominated by drying and astringent tannins. A nice marriage of fruit and wood with nice earthy shale notes offer some cut on the back end and black cherry fruit that read more...

A nice round kind of creature, saddle up, horseradish, wooded door with copper handle, I think of a Spanish villa in the early 20th. Low on fruits, solid tannins, nice citric spike. It has the appeal of your grand-pappy's war-chest. What treasures will you find?

Marqués de Murrieta is traditional producer from the Rioja region of Spain, making wines of a classic style that are age-worthy. This Reserva, made from Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo, exhibits cedar, cigar box, and bright red fruit flavors, with lively, sweet tannins on the finish.

"The 2004 Reserva (of which there are a mere 80,000 cases) is a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha, and 3% Mazuelo aged for 22 months in a mix of new and used American oak. Medium to dark ruby-colored, it offers up a stylish bouquet of cedar, leather, tobacco, spice box, and blackberry. Medium-bodied, nicely balanced, and succulent, this ripe, tasty wine from a superb vintage will evolve for 3-4 years and perform at its best between 2011 and 2019. It is a very good value in the classic Rioja style...89" WA 5/08

The grapes are first de-stemmed and then fermented in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks for 8-11 days, with constant skin contact, at 25C. During fermentation the wine is both pumped over the cap of grape skins at the top of the tank (remontage), and also the cap is pressed into the fermenting wine every second day (pigeage). Both these processes ensure maximum color and aroma, without producing excessive tannin. Afterwards the solid parts of the grapes are pressed in vertical wooden presses with double screws. This is a smooth and slow treatment that favors the extraction of the read more...
