Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Riserva 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Established in 1852, Murrieta are one of the oldest and most respected bodegas of Rioja. Their wines are made in a "classic" Rioja style and receive long ageing in barrel before release. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived, both red and white, and some - like the Gran Reserva "Castillo Ygay" - have become legendary amongst Rioja-lovers. Marqués de Murrieta have not stood back and stagnated however: Their 300 hectare estate now has Cabernet Sauvignon planted for their Dalmau blend which represents Murrieta’s avante-garde expression of Riojan terroir. Thebarrel ageing process is 31 months in American oak barrels (at least 10 months in new oak) followed by bottle aging for 3 years before being released to the market. This pairs well with all red meats, roasts and game, cured ham and cheeses.

Sweet and intensely fruity on the nose. The jammy full red fruit recalls gummy bears! There’s integrate oak spice here that lends a rather cinnamon tone to the nose, but ultimately reveals a very deep and complex array of aromatics. A touch soft in the mouth, this exhibits lovely richness. The framing spices of the nose help to delineate the rich, powerful dark fruits on the palate. Shows a touch of dried plummy richness and remains a bit chunky and chewy through the modest finish. This is a wine of power and should improve with additional cellaring. 92pts

oak noticeable, tad pruney, plums on nose with an amazing smooth palate, well balanced with a little kick on the end, with potential to age longer. incredible complexity

I love it. It is a classical style, mixed with a touch of modernity. The color is deep, but pretty evolutioned. Bright, special. The aroma is complex, hard to define, difficult to explain. In the mouth, long sensation, deep too. Elegant. arrogant too. Old and young... both. I love it.

Lovely - classic rioja, with lots of mouth-filling fruit. Terrific, enticing nose, that doesn't lead to a disppointment. Best wine of 20 tasted on the night (including a couple at twice theprice).

Only made in stellar vintages and a wine that's equally complex as it is unique. Full of cherries, leather, chestnuts and spice. A wine with incredible character that's drinking well but can still be stored for years.
