Food Pairings for Markus Molitor Riesling Spätlese
Aromas of petrol Lime stone fruit minerality petrol roses nice mouthfeel, slight sweetness peach apricot
Intense peach, honey, and apricot, with a touch of strawberry and anise, and the slightest hint of yeast. Just on the edge of carbonation, this wine delivers a tease of sparkle just a moment before a wave of creamy fruit hits your tongue. Medium-sweet and smooth, with a nice, long finish, this wine is great for sipping -- but good luck trying to restrain yourself. I would certainly pair this with cheese (it has enough flavor to stand up to the strongest cheeses), as well as fruits and breads. It would also be an interesting complement to a lemony fish entree.
When I sip this excellent spätlese I taste GRAPE, the lucious, sweet-tart goodness of perfectly ripe fruit. This is a sweet wine to be sure, but like any good riesling, has enough acid to make it a joy to the palate. If the German vintner's highest calling is to preserve and enhance the taste of this lovely fruit, as I believe it is, this is an extremely successful wine. There are other flavors here, a little metallic steel from the vats perhaps, and subtleties I'm not equipped to describe, but if you're preference in apples runs towards the tart-sweet Pink Ladies and Winesaps, this wine is for you.
The Molitor family have been making wine at their estate for 8 generations. The home of the winery lies situated above the Moselle in the middle of the Wehlener Klosterberg vineyard, with a view over to the vineyards of Zeltingen. With over 34 hectares of well-sited vineyard, Markus is one of the middle Mosels most important growers. Markus Molitor's vision has been to help restore the wines of the Mosel valley to their former glory, with unmistakeable Riesling wines true to their individual vineyard identity (terroir) and of extreme longevity. Markus Molitor excels at weaving together that incredibly tense and vibrant mix of minerality, acidity, sweetness and ripeness, and has produced a selection of almost sixty wines from numerous vineyards, every possible Pradikat level. The Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Spätlese Trocken hails from a very good quality parcel in the heart of the site, with extremely old vines. The slate here is decomposed and fine, regularly producing excellent quality, very ripe grapes with very elegant and fine fruit. This Reisling exudes Aromas reminiscent of ripe apple, tangerine, lime, white pepper, nutmeg, mace and flint stone. Light, vibrant, fresh and juicy with refreshing acidity and a complex. The Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Spätlese Trocken is particularly Delicious with oriental cuisine - try it with a tartare of tuna, sea bass with shrimp dumplings, baby bok choy and shiitake soup.
