Markham Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley 2012
"A bit of coaxing will reveal cassis, vanilla, red cherry jam, spicy notes of cinnamon, anise and smoky BBQ. On the palate, this wine feels lush and silky. Still a bit grippy on the finish, a quick decant should help especially if paired with a peppered rib eye steak! A true Napa Valley blend of vineyards! Our Estate vineyards provide the backbone for the blend, totaling almost 65% of this bottling. Merlot from Oak Knoll gives sour cherry character while the Yountville components provide the classic Bing cherry aromas and flavors for which our Merlot is known. The jammy notes come from blending in warmer up-valley fruit from Calistoga vineyards. Much care is take to maximize the filtered light and allow the Merlot to hang freely within the canopy during harvest. This allows the fruit to mature and color evenly, leaving any vegetal hints behind. The wines are sent to barrels as individual lots to mature, allowing for greater understanding the direct impact of our viticultural & fermentation practices each vintage." -Winery
Wonderful offering, with blackberry, mocha, dark cherry tannins, spice and violets. This expresses a less full bodied version of merlot (feminine style) and they've done it well for years. Drink or hold -90 points - Paul
Half an open bottle taken home from Jack & Rosanne's 50th wedding anniversary. Did not drink the remainder for a week+ after it had been opened. That said, no complaints and no accolades. It was still drinkable.
Awful. Completely unstructured, bitter and raw.
I stored this bottle just to see how it would hang. Nothing special, it's just that I like Markham and this bottling received less positive hype than most. A brooding dark juice with excellent viscosity, blackberry and dark cherry, chocolate and spice. Married completely now this finishes balanced and seamless. Paul 90 points
Nose of sour red cherry, eucalyptus, green herbs and red currant. Very red nose. Great acidity on the palate with a juicy profile. Feminine and pretty in style with flavors of cherry, vanilla and cola. Medium bodied and lighter in style. Very nice! 92 pts. 5/10/13 at winery
Ripe, round & rich on the palate this wine scores again with complex cherry vanilla cola fruit flavors. Lush & velvety the way only Merlot can be. The substantial tannins will allow this wine to age.
2007 Napa Markham Merlot was delicious. A lot of complex fruit without being overly heavy or high in alcohol. Delicious lingering vanilla with just the softest, slightest hint of oak lingers on the palette. Good stuff.

This Merlot is typical of the vintage in that respect. Aromas of violets and blackberry briars remind one of Cabernet Sauvignon while the fleshy texture alludes to Merlot. The attractive sweet espresso and black raspberry flavors add to the mystery. A bit of bottle age should allow the spicy, cherry fruit and vanilla oak to shine.
Founded by Jean Laurent, formerly of Bordeaux in 1879. Jean Laurent originally came looking for gold but instead found his fortune in grapes.
Black pepper and tobacco aromas swirl around the cherry cola core. Roasted nut and caramel oak flavors compliment the beautiful rich cherry fruit.
Aromas of sour cherries, toasted hazelnuts and vanilla cream might sound decadent enough for dessert, but yoursquo;ll be surprised how perfectly this rich wine works with dinner. Stash a few bottles away to experience what time does to its dense, velvety structure, but by all means enjoy some now for its precious, blackberry fruit.
A cherry bomb that will continue to improve with age. Layers of cola, root beer, vanilla & mocha toast aromas. Ripe cherry flavors held together by tannins that fill the palate. Pair with grilled lamb shank or peppered steak.
Dusty berry, herb and stewed plum aromas lead to similar flavors that are tightly wound and firmly tannic. Finishes with good depth and concentration, and firm-enough tannins to cellar short-term. Best from 2003 through 2008.
