Markham Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine is a deep garnet in the glass, transitioning into bright ruby along the edges. The nose is quite pleasant, with rich black fruit and Asian spices flowing gingerly over a bed of toasted oak. The taste is quite nice, with plenty if ripe black fruit up front, blackberry, cassis and plum, which quickly transition to some vanilla and anise midpalate. The finish is quite nice, with rich and supple tannins supporting a long, dry finish. Overall, a very nice example of a more classic Napa Valley Cabernet. Soft sweet cherries and raspberries. Sweet oak covers most of the nose. Very soft with a mouth watering feel on the front pallet. The mid pallet has some cherry leading into a creamy taste like a cherry pie ala mode. The finish has hints of nutmeg and closes with nice soft tannins. This wine is very approachable. Not very complex and great for a special treat.

Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Markham is one of Napa Valley's first wineries. Markham founder, Jean Laurent immigrated from Bordeaux and built the historic stone cellar that is the Markham Vineyards landmark, back in 1879.100 years later Bruce Markham bought the winery along with a large selection of Napa Valley vineyards and ever since Markham has been well known for its outstanding Napa Valley wines. This Cab is a 2013, perhaps one of the best vintages in Napa Valley ever. It's a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, all estate grown. The wine aged 21 months in 42% new oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points and said "Chocolate-covered raspberry forms the luscious core of this fairly priced wine that's medium-bodied, moderately naked in its oak use and soft in its approachability. Rich, dense and luxurious, it will pair well with any grilled meats."

Briary aromas mingle with fresh blackberries and caramel oak highlight in this Cabernet Sauvignon. Dense, plum jam flavors support the solid core of tannins on the finish. Vanilla toast and nutmeg spice things up as the wine continues to open in the glass.

Winemaker's notes:Milk chocolate, cassis and berry jam aromas mix together with layers of anise and vanilla. Juicy mulberry fruit flavors provide a lush mouthfeel balanced with caramel and more milk chocolate in the mid-palate. This young wine has chewy tannins that will settle wonderfully for long-term aging. Enjoy its youthful exuberance now paired with a well-seasoned rib-eye or an herbed white bean ragout.

Wine Tasting NotesBlackberry jam and cedar aromas are highlighted by intriguing notes of fresh tarragon. The concentrated texture of this Cabernet draws you in; soft yet gloriously chewy. Berry fruit flavors are accented by rich caramel and finish with a subtle mineral "sense of place." Decanting is conducive to immediate enjoyment and should bring out wonderful floral perfume common to our wines.
