Marilyn Merlot Merlot Napa Valley 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown in the Yountville and Oakville regions of the Napa Valley. The wine's color is vibrantly garnet and the complex aromas of blueberries, anise and toasty oak all work in harmony for a wine worthy of its legacy. Marilyn Wines traces its origins to 1981, when a small group of friends started making wine at their home near St. Helena, in Napa Valley. One evening in 1983, over dinner and a bottle of homemade Merlot, the concept of "Marilyn Merlot" was born. The wine enjoyed a good deal of popularity around the valley and was often donated to charity auctions and given as Christmas gifts. In 1985, the playful idea and the fine wine that bore its name led to the limited production of Marilyn Merlot for sale to the public. Over the years, continuing acclaim from critics, collectors, and lovers of fine wine have led to the production of Marilyn Cabernet, Norma Jeane wines, the Velvet Collection wines, and our eighteenth vintage of Marilyn Merlot. Marilyn Wines holds an exclusive agreement with the estate of Marilyn Monroe for the use of the name and the images. The royalties paid are distributed according to Marilyn's will to Anna Strasberg who helps support the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute and to the Anna Freud Foundation in London, which has set up a special child treatment center called the Monroe Young Family Center. The long cool growing season of 2010 in Napa Valley yielded Merlot wines of lovely balance and elegance. 2010 Marilyn Merlot is completely ready to enjoy on release and offers the promise of graceful aging as well. A great conversation piece at dinner, a wine that lives up to its promise of Napa glamour in a glass. - WineryThe photo portrait of Marilyn Monroe in a red dress set against a black background is from the last photo session with Milton Greene in 1957, and it is as playful as it is provocative -- qualities Marilyn often combined in films and in life.

Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. This fancifully named Merlot is filled with firm and shapely fruit smelling of red cherries with a touch of clove-like spice for good measure. It is supple in texture and a bit plump at first impression but recovers nicely across the palate and finishes with a bang.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

This wine is every bit as special as its package, says Donna Holder, one of the owners of Marilyn Wines. It is a must for collectors, but is also a Napa Valley Merlot that stands beautifully on its own.
