Marietta Cellars Zinfandel Sonoma County 2009

Member Review by Onin24eagle:

Little hot on the nose at first but only takes a few minutes to mellow down. Nice pepper and black fruit on the nose. Very spicy on the palate and quite jammy. I got a big dose of black licorice on the first few tastes but I didn't detect that so much after a bit. Pretty earthy on the finish but not too much. Nice tannins too. It just so happens that my wife was making popcorn and offered me some while I was trying this. This is the second Zin I've had recently that pairs beautifully with buttered popcorn. I've tried this pairing a few times now and more often than not it doesn't work. With this one it blends wonderfully, like warm apple pie and ice cream, they just seem to go together. Very nice. Recommended.

Owner and winemaker Chris Bilbro initially founded Marietta Cellars in 1978 in a rented cow barn in the Dry Creek Valley. The wines of Marietta Cellars are a personification of Chris Bilbro, his outlook on life, and general lifestyle. No wine is complete on its own; pleasurable pursuits such as cooking, fishing, hunting, gardening, and entertaining add balance to wine, as they do to life. To this day, no wine gets bottled without Chris’s approval and no vineyard row goes more than a week without Chris riding his ATV through it. Read less

Juicy, sweet core of ripe raspberry, soft finish. The nice thing about this zin is that the fruit is fresh, not jammy. The issue I had is just the level of sweetness on the front of the palate. Hard to get past for me, but if you like zin, this is a good offering.

The aromas are bright red and black berries with pepperand spice. The mouthfeel is very lush with palate-coating blackberry flavors, spice, and slight hints of toasty oak.
