Marietta Cellars Zinfandel 2011

External Review by The Wine Buyer:

High-lighted by bright and rich red berry fruit aromatics and flavors. The nose is full of raspberries, blackberries, black pepper, and brown spices with really high toned and immediate aromas jumping from the glass. The mouth feel is lush and viscous with ample acidity and tannin pulling through on the finish.

Owner and winemaker Chris Bilbro initially founded Marietta Cellars in 1978 in a rented cow barn in the Dry Creek Valley. The wines of Marietta Cellars are a personification of Chris Bilbro, his outlook on life, and general lifestyle. No wine is complete on its own; pleasurable pursuits such as cooking, fishing, hunting, gardening, and entertaining add balance to wine, as they do to life. To this day, no wine gets bottled without Chris’s approval and no vineyard row goes more than a week without Chris riding his ATV through it. Read less

Lush and jammy, the Marietta is loaded with rich black currant, plum and juicy raspberry notes. Bold pepper, cola and smoke notes add a bit of depth, but this is generally a fruit-forward, teeth-staining red, best with barbecued ribs or, better still, on its own.

The aromas are bright red and black berries with pepperand spice. The mouthfeel is very lush with palate-coating blackberry flavors, spice, and slight hints of toasty oak.

The 2011 Zinfandel Sonoma is a successful effort in what is generally a lousy vintage for Zinfandel. Spicy with abundant red currant and red cherry fruit, underbrush and spice box, it exhibits good richness, medium body and excellent ripeness in this challenging year. Drink it over the next 3–4 years.
