Margerum Grenache Santa Barbara County 2006
2006 Margerum Grenache100 cases producedOur Grenache is made using and emphasizing long-time Burgundian sensibilities in the approach to, and in the techniques we use, (small open top, cool fermentation, low extraction, elegance, fruit emphasis) in making this wine. Understanding that Grenache is a thin skinned grape and it is most expressive in this "velvet glove in and iron fist" style. In a group tasting this wine could be overlooked but in the reality of wine and the table this is the wine that most satisfies, pairs with food - doesnt dominate - and complements. This wine will not knock you over the head - it is NOT dark, it is NOT big, but it IS a supple expression of Grenache that is intellectual and compelling (if you study the wine) in its expression. Many will not "get" this wine - but the few who do will fall for it in a big way.
We are a small producer of Syrah, a Rhone style blend called M5, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and a few other varietals. Our grapes are purchased from the finest growers in Santa Barbara County. In addition, we are beginning to import a few exceptional wines we have found in our travels to the wine regions of Italy and France.

A subtle note of raw wood greets the nose and is quickly joined by bright candied cherry fruit, floral and hay tones with vanilla crème, and balsamic/roast beef accents. Silky and superbly integrated with bright acids and fine tannins lurking just under the sheen of bright red berry fruit that has a melony/canteloup note adding complexity. This gains some dried green herb and vanilla notes on the backend but never becomes ponderous or heavy. A bit of apple adds to the mix, round and very friendly. The finish continues the theme but gains a firmness one misses on the palate offering vanilla tinged strawberries and spice and a hint of medicinal licorice. 91pts
