High toned on the nose with sweet oak, coffee, and caramel aromas along with a touch of VA. Lean, focused and pure in the mouth this is tight and mineral, and packed with tannin today but you can get a sense of the fruit here. This is young and still pretty raw with dark red cherry fruit that peeks out a bit on the modest finish which is a bit chunky and short due to the tannins. A real disconnect with the overtly modern nose. This seems to have everything in place to improve. 86pts

Very pretty floral and raspberry aromas, with hints of licorice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a milk chocolate, berry and vanilla aftertaste. Balanced and refined. A beauty. Best after 2007.

The 2001 Barolo Brunate, from one of Baroloandrsquo;s most storied sites, presents a dark ruby color along with a deep, penetrating nose of spices, menthol and eucalyptus. Layers of super-rich dark fruit, menthol, toasted oak and balsamic notes emerge in this beautifully delineated chameleon-like wine which at times appears soft and feminine, while at others appears weighty and authoritative. Anticipated maturity: 2009andndash;2019.

Bright, dark red. Musky aromas of raspberry, nutmeg, mace, chocolate and dried flowers. Sweeter and denser than the Bricco Viole but quite backward. A full, chewy, rather powerful wine with very good inner-mouth energy. Finishes long and powerful, with substantial tannic clout and lingering sweetness. This will require at least a few years to soften.

Very fresh and fruity with mineral, berry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Full and silky. Needs time to develop. Best after 2008.

The 2004 Barolo Brunate is textbook Barolo from one of Piedmontrsquo;s most historic sites. Gorgeous, open aromatics lead to a perfumed core of dark cherries, spices, menthol and eucalyptus. This vibrant, pure Barolo needs bottle age to come together, but it is a majestic wine in the making. Readers looking for an under the radar gem need look no further than Marco Marengorsquo;s sublime 2004 Barolo Brunate. Anticipated maturity: 2011ndash;2024.
