Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

All SS Treiso vineyard, single vineyard, Not fermented dry on the skins, bleed off to keep the wines lighter and less tannic, Young estery nose is earthy and quite black fruited, in a spicy, assertive, astringent way. This has a nice entry, a bit weighty but with rather silky tannins and nice red and black fruit that shows a little spice and earth complexity. This shows nice balance of flavors and complexity in a very slightly chunky style. 87pts

Alberto di Grésy was born in Milan on June 1, 1952, where he completed his studies and graduated from the Bocconi University with a Doctorate in Business Administration. Growing up with a passion for the land and the wine, he spent many weekends and most of his summer vacations at Villa Giulia. This 19th century hunting lodge, built by his grandfather, Carlo, is located on the hill called Monte Aribaldo in the heart of the Piedmont region. He supervised the agricultural operations of the family estates and concluded early on that he didn't want to limit himself to selling the grapes from his vineyards to the finest wine producers in the area as was the tradition in the Langhe. In 1973 Alberto di Grésy began vinifying his own wine: his objective was to produce wine with the best available technology while respecting tradition, and to transfer as much as possible of the character and personality of the terrain vineyard site, and varietal into the bottle. Shows some toast on the nose, Minty, with raw wood, small red fruits, and camphory white soil notes. Nicely firmer style on the palate with nice amplitude in a rather tannic, big fruit but not fruity style that shows lots earthy, mineral aspects that make the palate almost lean and elegant. The long finish shows lots of tannins, lots of fruit tannins, but also just a touch of drying wood tannin on the finish, which ends with a lightly toasty note. 89pts

With perfumes of small strawberries in alcohol this exhibits more Nebbiolo fruit backed up with integrated wood, camphor and mint aromas. The bright acids on entry are quickly covered by very subtly creamy and compact red fruits. Dense with tannins that are slightly austere yet polished, there is still nice focus and detail here with a nice savory finish. This shows some vitality and elegance, and is quite classic but the oak is noticeable if not obtrusive on the nose and it adds a textural note on the palate. 90pts

Smells a bit marshmallow, vanilla, pencil lead rich in a bit dull and heavy vein. Opening with sweet fruit and toast flavors in a broad style, this shows nice acidity making the midpalate bright and lively with lots of strawberry fruit and a little whipped creaminess from the oak. There is noticeable wood tannin all across the tongue and through the short finish. This is a bit chunky and shows an inelegant use of wood. 87pts

Lighter in character than the 2009 with dried citrus peels, tea leaf, rose petal, and barely ripe red berry fruit on the nose. A bit narrow but fairly ripe on the palate, with fine grained tannins lending this a transparent and elegant feel with a nice silky texture. The palate reveals layers of leafy fennel, soil driven, and slightly umami flavors, with a lovely sweetness on the finish that contrasts the very precise tannins. 90pts

A bit pruny on the nose and intense with lots of soil tones, some minty spice, some prosciutto, and pencil shavings framing lots of strawberry fruit with a top notes of smoke and vanilla, and clay. Soft, rich, and powerful in the mouth this displays lots of red fruit even some watermelon, with nice slightly rustic and spicy tannins. Fresh and powerful on the finish this is full of red cherry and earthy fruit and retains a sweetness on the long finish. This is pretty attractive 2007. 91pts

Still young and a little acidic, even after breathing for more than an hour. Drinkable, just not the best.

Very nice latent fruit (red currant & dark cherry); pairs very well with autumn squash and grilled salmon.

Straw-yellow color with bright green reflections on the rim of the glass. On the nose, the aromas are intense and refined, fruity and flowery with scents of golden apples, pear, almond and chamomile. Hints of golden apples, refreshing honeydew melon and citrus zest blend perfectly on the palate. The finish is harmonious and persistent.

Really hard to beat the incredible value this vibrant red delivers. Marchesi di Barolo is a historic producer in Piedmont and their portfolio includes extraordinary single vineyard Barolos, but at the introductory end we find this delicious, bright Barbera that’s easy to love from both taste and budget standpoints. Blended with 10% Dolcetto for added smoothness, this wine is brimming with charming ripe cherry fruit and supple racy tannins. A perfect match to your favorite pizza.

Garnet-red in color with ruby reflections. An intense odor with clean scents of vanilla, roasted hazelnuts, licorice and spices. Full, elegant, full-bodied and austere flavor with recurring hints of the olfactory sensations. Pleasant touch of tar and oaky notes in perfect equilibrium.

Colour: Brilliant ruby red with violet reflections. Bouquet: Intense and persistent, reminiscent of small fruits (cherries...) and almonds. Taste: Velvety and harmonious; good structure, with a pleasant bitterish almond aftertaste and just the right tannins to make it an attactive wine.
