This smells fairly intense with dusty mineral notes, oak notes and leafy edged black currant fruit on the nose, all over dark, leather-dried strawberry fruit. Tight and focused in the mouth and fairly rich up front with nice, slightly vanilla-edged dark berry and dried strawberry fruit. This is rather smooth though there is a base of fine tannin. Some woody tannin emerging on the back end is balanced by soft if lively acids. A touch extracted on the finish, showing an odd blend of sweet, ripe black cherry and grapey fruit and drying, firm tannins, though the fruit manages to stick around for a while. This is a touch rough around the edges. 88pts

D/H 2013-2020- The 2008 Chianti Rufina Riserva Nipozzano is a very beautiful wine in this vintage. It shows attractive mid-palate juiciness in its sweet red berries, crushed flowers and spices. This mid-weight, delicate Chianti is best enjoyed over the next few years while the fruit retains its freshness. The Nipozzano is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine spent 24 months in French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. Score: 89. —Antonio Galloni, August 2011. @ryebrook

A soft-spoken Chianti that hides layers of depth. Hints of leather surround the cherry, raspberry, and strawberry notes on the nose. The tannins are quite underspoken, but they finish stronger. The wine is an elegant grower, revealing depth as you sip. It is quite indicative of the milder weather of the 2008 vintage.

Wine Tasting NotesAn enticing, rather pronounced ruby red, edged with garnet. Its suite of fragrances exhibits considerable complexity, opening to dark fruit such as plum and blackcurrant, then enriched by a pungent spiciness that betrays cinnamon and clove. The attack offers dense, impressive pulp, and fine-grained tannins that marry beautifully with its alcohol; the result is a solidly-built, but not heavy or extractive, wine with a seamless, long-lingering finish.
