The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of the most significant wine producers in Italy, with nine estates, and more than 1,000 hectares, in Tuscany. The attractive, mid-weight 1999 Chianti Rufina Nipozzano Riserva offers black cherry fruit, new saddle leather, and spice box aromas. Well-made, with good acidity as well as aggressive tannin, it should be consumed over the next 5ndash;6 years.

Very ripe aromas of black licorice and hints of raisins. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a peppery finish. Lacks a bit of finesse, but impressive. Best after 2003.
