Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Morgon produces rich, earthy wine that can easily be mistaken for Burgundy. Lapierre is a great biodynamic producer. This offers up notes of beet roots, dusty earth, anise and aggressive herb and medicinal notes. With a very light, natural and elegant in the mouth this is refreshing but quite herbal and almost vegetal on the palate with a decided green streak and some granitic minerality but not much fruit. 84pts

Marcel Lapierre:
In 1973, Marcel Lapierre begins again the family business composed then by 7 hectares with the customers of his grand father with whom he is still working today. It is from 1981, under the impulse of Jules Chauvet, well-known researcher at the University of California that Marcel Lapierre decided to vinify without SO2 and additional yeasts and to cultivate in a bio dynamic way, without weed killers and chemical fertilizers.

Fresh nose of strawberry and raspberry. Toasted pecan, blood orange and strawberry. Some subtle forest floor. Nice blend of fruit, flower and minerality. Well balanced. 89 pts. 1/19/13

Color: transparent, light ruby red Smell: cherries, something floral, earthy (maybe even medicinal?) Taste: very light tannins, medium-dry, medium acidity, tarty My first purchase from Marcel Lapierre. The bottle was confusing to open, but the red wax covering the rim is a nice touch as it prevents dripping down the side of the bottle.

Had with shrimp pasta, good combo. Liked it better the second day.

Clear, with a purple to ruby red color, powerful aromas of strawberry and raspberry, with a hint of earthiness and spice. Light to medium body, with a nice moderate to long finish and medium complexity. I really liked this one.

The wild strawberry and pomegranate flavors are highlighted by fresh acidity in this balanced red, with graphite, licorice and floral notes that ease into the tangy finish. Drink now through 2017. 2,265 cases imported.

The 2013 Morgon is more reticent on the nose compared to the non-sulphite version, without the same detail. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannins and pretty red cherry and candied orange peel note toward the finish.

Here’s what a great Morgon should taste like: tart red fruit that lasts for minutes, bringing in dark scents of freshly turned earth, cured meat and blackberries, brightening to floral scents of roses. This offers zesty intensity out of a tight, austere structure. Lapierre’s Morgon has a track record for aging, and this one should continue to gain in stature over the next five years or more.

A polished style, offering well-knit tannins and layered flavors of black cherry coulis, licorice snap, macerated plum, fragrant leather and ground star anise. Very refined, this is juicy and focused through to the finish, which shows accents of smoky mineral and garrigue. Drink now through 2020.

Deep ruby. Sexy, floral aromas of red fruit liqueur, smoky minerals and licorice. Silky and sweet on entry, then denser and spicier in the mid-palate, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors underscored by zesty minerality. Shows excellent clarity and thrust on the seamless, sweet, strikingly persistent finish. A really lovely blend of power and finesse.
