Marcassin Vineyard:
Marcassin is the wine produced by celebrated California cult winemaker Helen Turley and her husband, John Wetlaufer on the Sonoma Coast in California. The name, meaning “wild boar” is also the name of the 20-acre vineyard where the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for her wines are grown. Two-thirds of the winery’s production is Pinot Noir. Production is limited to 2,500 to 3,000 cases a year, with the majority of the bottles sold only to exclusive mailing list members (there is an extensive wait list to receive them). The wines typically start at around $125 a bottle to the mailing list and sell for many more times that at auction. Until 2011, the wine itself was produced at Turley’s Martinelli winery in the Russian River Valley, but are now produced solely at Marcassin.  Read less

The most structured, backward, and restrained of the Pinot Noirs is the dark ruby/plum-colored 2005 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard. Notes of crushed rock, sweet cherries, raspberries and gamey autumnal forest floor notes as well as spring flowers make for a reserved but burgeoning, enormously promising aromatic display. In the mouth, it is powerful and full-bodied, with superb texture, definition, purity, good acidity, and ripe tannin. This is a remarkable Pinot Noir that should drink well for 15 or more years.

The 2005 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge displays the sexiest, most exotic side of Pinot Noir with its dense, dark raspberry, floral and forest floor notes intermixed with spice and fresh mushrooms. Its sweet, broad fruit, deep ruby/plum color, terrific body, and lush, heady mouthfeel make for a remarkable wine. As it sits in the glass, smoky blueberries and wet stones, even a gun flint-like aroma, seem to emerge. Drink this over the next 12-15 years.
