Marcassin Vineyard:
Marcassin is the wine produced by celebrated California cult winemaker Helen Turley and her husband, John Wetlaufer on the Sonoma Coast in California. The name, meaning “wild boar” is also the name of the 20-acre vineyard where the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for her wines are grown. Two-thirds of the winery’s production is Pinot Noir. Production is limited to 2,500 to 3,000 cases a year, with the majority of the bottles sold only to exclusive mailing list members (there is an extensive wait list to receive them). The wines typically start at around $125 a bottle to the mailing list and sell for many more times that at auction. Until 2011, the wine itself was produced at Turley’s Martinelli winery in the Russian River Valley, but are now produced solely at Marcassin.  Read less

We tried this 2004 Marcassin Vineyard with our wine-knowledgeable friends and we all agreed that this was one of the very best, if not the best, Pinot Noirs we have ever tasted.

Utterly profound, the 2004 Pinot Noir Marcassin Estate has a deep plum/ruby/purple-tinged color and a sweet nose of black raspberries, roasted meats, forest aromas, soy, and fresh mushrooms. Layered and multi-dimensional, with sweet but noticeable tannin, and broad, intense flavors, this is a stunning wine that should drink nicely for a decade or more.

The 2004 Pinot Noirs are more near-term propositions than the more structured, backward 2005s. The 2004 Pinot Noir Three Sisters displays a dark ruby/plum color and notes of root vegetables intermixed with sweet plum, raspberry, and gamey, foresty scents. The wine has terrific fruit, medium to full body, no hard edges, and an opulent, almost lavish finish that goes on for 50+ seconds.

Once again, the 2004 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge, which always comes from Dijon clones, displays extraordinary Vosne-Romanee-like notes of forest floor and blue and black fruits intermixed with some truffle, smoked meats, and root vegetables. Dark, round, and lush, this sumptuous Pinot Noir is a hedonistic/intellectual thrill ride that should be drunk over the next 6-8 years.

Good red-ruby. Vibrant, highly nuanced aromas of raspberry, blueberry liqueur, smoke, flint and flowers. Round, shapely and concentrated; a step up from the Three Sisters in intensity, energy and thrust. The dark fruit flavors show an enticing sappy ... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
