What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger in Issue 15, 3rd Quarter, 2004 Already lightly bricking at the edges with subtle secondary hints, including spice, earth and lactic acid aromas followed by ripe, sweet, round and intense medium full flavors that offer good persistence but not much complexity, detail or finesse and frankly the wine seems awkward and not especially well balanced. This is also aging very rapidly and I would be inclined to perhaps wait one more year and then drink over the next 2 to 3 as this will not make old bones.

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 114, May/June 2004 ($75) Medium red. Superripe, rather advanced aromas of raspberry, chocolate, mocha, smoked meat and underbrush. At once thick and penetrating, with complex flavors of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, smoke and spices framed by bright acids. Finishes dense, powerful and long. This held up reasonably well in the glass, but it's far more evolved than a 1999 pinot noir should be today.
