Food Pairings for Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate
Editorial Reviews for Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate
AWE blind tasting - lightly smokey, a touch sweet, nice raspberry fruit tones, light grilled meat, sweet entry, nice fruit, good balance here with fresh acidity and ripe tannins, a little soft perhaps but with good depth to the funghi and spearmint tinged, sour cherry fruit, a touch short, nice and drinkable 88-89
Right out of the glass this is full of explosively sweet red fruit that is a bit simple, but packed with the essence of sour cherry fruit. With time the fruit begins to mellow and is joined by notes of sandalwood, camphor, and subtle spice tones. Soft and rich on entry with nice mineral tones, this is a bit lean but retains great focus through the palate. The tannins start out rather small but build in the glass as this closes up. The finish offers bitter red fruits laced with sneaky, savory tones. This has excellent potential with great depth in an elegant, complete, if smaller scaled, style 90pts
Deep and filled with roses, this begins a bit monotone on the nose with hints of dry earth, sassafras and beet root. With air this gains a bit or a brownie edge, full of moist earth, hints of game and BO and plump, roasted strawberry. What begins as a lush, round, seductive mouthfeel turns even more polished with air revealing a touch of spice, white pepper and earth that lays like a blanket over the slightly bitter tannins and wonderfully integrated acidity. This is well balanced and fresh but turns just a touch muddied on the finish. 91pts
40 day fermentation/maceration then 2 years in botte Dark and earthy on the nose with incipient hints of mushroom, slight confiture of black raspberry and nuanced notes of limestone and smoke 2+ Packed in the mouth with a rich matte feel supported by bright acids and fine ripe tannins 3 A bit tight at first yet layered in the mouth with subtle notes of dried fruits, slightly roasted strawberry, red berries a touch of vegetal freshness, still a bit closed but with obvious richness 3 Very clean and precise on the finish but still short at this point 2 2012-2025 91pts
Dark carob, jellied black fruit, and dusty minerality greets the nose. Round and just a little sweet in the mouth this offers up attractive fruit that has a little figgy edge to it along with a nice mineral note working as a contrasting note. Pretty packed with tannin and showing a touch of heat on the finish. Interesting if not as well balanced as some, this could improve. 88pts
This opened with a fine nose immediately offering up perfumed notes of cherry, scorched orange rind, floral notes and sandalwood with top notes of mint and a touch of funk all over a bed of mineral rich clay. In the mouth this is very bright, with big acids. It’s a touch austere with lovely wild cherry fruit and slightly rustic tannins adding a bit of grit to the texture. Real nice length on the finish with subtle pomegranate and stronger raspberry tones and a crisp, focused citrussy finale. This is very friendly and complete tonight with great aromatics but could use a bit more complexity in the mouth. 2008-2018 91pts
low key nose with good balance and complexity, sandy and limastoney with a narrow band of black spice and faint dark cherry note on the nose which developed into a spicier, more typical profile with time. Round and sweet upfronnt with lovely integration though the tannins remained a bit astringent and the acids a touch high they served to compliment the slightly musky, with grapy/ red berry fruit, still a touch young but a complete and succesful barolo
The 2008 Brunate is Marcarini's icon wine, a true expression of this top quality site with very intense savory aromas of tobacco, mocha, truffle, leather and candle wax. It is a more "masculine" interpretation of Barolo and a true masterpiece created by winemaker Manuel Marchetti, a passionate steward of the Marcarini family wines. With signature high acid and fine grippy tannins perfectly balanced with 14% alcohol, it is the most concentrated of Marcarini's two single vineyard Barolos, massive yet elegant.
External Reviews for Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate
Barolo from the Brunate cru shows gorgeous characteristics of mature fruit, spice, natural rubber, asphalt, tar and root beer. The wineandrsquo;s personality is marked by a comforting, almost familiar territory-driven feel that recalls the greatest Nebbiolo-based wines from Piedmont. Save this bottle in your cellar for 10 years or more.
The estateandrsquo;s 2007 Barolo Brunate sweeps across the palate with endless layers of expansive fruit. The Brunate shows fabulous intensity and depth in an uncharacteristically rich, opulent style for Marcarini. Despite the wineandrsquo;s richness there is plenty of Brunate character, partially on the finish, where menthol, pine, resin, spices and a host of other balsamic notes speak with great eloquence. Marcarini harvested Brunate on September 24 and 25. The wine saw 15 days of fermentation, followed by another 42 days of contact with the skins. The wine then spent two years in large, neutral casks prior to being racked into steel to rest before being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2017andndash;2027. These are some of the finest Baroli I have ever tasted from Marcarini and proprietor Manuel Marchetti. The warmth of the vintage had given the wines an extra level of generosity in the fruit that acts as a wonderful counterpoint to the firm tannins that are generally present in this estateandrsquo;s young Baroli.
The Brunate ldquo;grand crurdquo; (because it really is considered among the top three best vineyards) has fatter soil with a higher clay content that shapes intense, well-structured wines. This expression delivers a beautiful bouquet of spice, berry fruit and vanilla shadings. The wine stands out thanks to its power and dimension. Drink after 2018.
Soaring aromatics emerge from the estatersquo;s 2004 Barolo Brunate. Menthol, dark cherries, spices, new leather and licorice are all to be found in this generous, layered wine. Sweet, ripe tannins provide a lovely bookend to this rich, classic Barolo from the Brunate vineyard. Still somewhat closed, it is likely to require at least a few years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2024.
Good medium red with an amber edge. Distinctly backward nose hints at dark raspberry and menthol; much less showy today than La Serra. Then rich, chewy, sweet and dense in the mouth, with bound-up flavors of dark fruits and camphor. Considerably deeper and more structured than La Serra, but these tannins will also require substantial bottle aging. Marcarini continues to employ a leisurely traditional maceration lasting 40 days, says director Manuel Marchetti, using a continuous and very gentle spray to keep the cap wet.
Looks, smells and tastes fairly mature already, with a range of licorice, tar and modest blackberry aromas and flavors. Finishes sweet and earthy. Best to drink from 1997.
Located between the communes of Barolo and La Morra, Brunate is one of the zonersquo;s most revered sites. Nebbiolo here often achieves a gentle grace that belies the grapersquo;s inherent power. This excellent rsquo;04 seems reticent at first, hidden behind a curtain of mineral tannin. It evolves with air, revealing delicate fruit flavors and a deep, profound earthiness. High notes of red cherries and roses are displayed against a backdrop of savory porcini and black truffle. The structure, too, shows a similar tension, a gentle push-pull between the bright acidity and sinewy, saline tannin. Precise and focused, this will reward patient cellaring for ten to 15 years.
