Marcarini Nebbiolo Barolo Brunate 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

From modernist to traditionalist, the ebullient Manuel Marchetti has been responsible for this 12ha estate since 1996 (he married the daughter). Brunate is the richer of their two La Morra crus, with La Serra's accent on finesse. The wines are aged in cement, following inveccchiamento/elevage' in large old oak botte, delivering cellar-worthy beauties that apparently gain colour over time; no hurry

This opened with a fine nose immediately offering up perfumed notes of cherry, scorched orange rind, floral notes and sandalwood with top notes of mint and a touch of funk all over a bed of mineral rich clay. In the mouth this is very bright, with big acids. It’s a touch austere with lovely wild cherry fruit and slightly rustic tannins adding a bit of grit to the texture. Real nice length on the finish with subtle pomegranate and stronger raspberry tones and a crisp, focused citrussy finale. This is very friendly and complete tonight with great aromatics but could use a bit more complexity in the mouth. 2008-2018 91pts

A touch shy on the nose though with building aromas of earth, old wood, rose petals and a faint hint of game accented with a top note of mint. On the palate this was a softer expression of Brunate, very much in line with the character of 1998. Stewy orange and strawberry fruit early on the palate gave way to lots of red cherry tones on the backend, all underpinned with good acids and rather soft, caressing tannins. A touch simple, though showing some orange peel and rose petals on the modest finish this has begun to drink well but lacks some depth and complexity. 88pts
