Marcarini Barolo Brunate(1996)

Barolo Brunate appears to possess greater richness of fruit than the 1996 Barolo La Serra, a more persuasive personality, and deep, big, full-bodied flavors with considerable tannin. It needs 5-6 years of cellaring and will keep for two decades. The Marcarini estate in La Morra is one of Barolo's most respected producers. Their 1989s and 1990s are tightly-knit, closed but promising wines that require 4-5 years of cellaring.Ripe and exotic, layering some herbal notes of sage and basil between the blasts of Port-like berry and plum flavors. A big wine, it finishes with a final whack of alcohol. read more...

The flavor calls to mind the sunshine of the Langhe hills; the bouquet is reminiscent of spice, tobacco, cinnamon and ripe fruit, with undertones of very fine wood. Color is garnet red, lively and intense, with slightly orange hues, but it is on the palate this wine fully reveals its magnitude, character and complexity: velvety, round, with soft tannins, well balanced components and remarkable persistence, it confirms the bouquets subtly spicy vein, with notes of liquorice and vanilla.
