Marcanda Gaja Magari Tuscany Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Franc Italy 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Magari (Cabernet Merlot and Cabernet Franc) possesses striking notes of graphite tar herbs mocha smoke black cherries earthiness and sweet French oak....powerful expansive and utterly convincing. It is a full rich well-rounded wine with an elegant silky finish. Polished and rich with lots of crushed raspberry and wet earth aromas that turn to flowers. Full-bodied with a beautiful core of ripe fruit and silky tannins. Long and beautiful.

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

From Angelo Gaja's Bolgheri estate, Ca' Marcanda, this Super Tuscan, Magari is the standard bearer. A blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc that's aged in French oak barrels. This wine's consistency is evident with three 92 point scores from three different publications. The Wine Advocate said "The 2007 Magari boasts a gorgeous nose redolent of grilled herbs, menthol, spices and dark fruit. This is a relatively lithe Magari that convinces for its length, balance and finessed personality. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017."
