Manzoni Santa Lucia Highlands Home Vineyard Syrah 2009
Our Syrah grapes were destemmed into open top fermenters; we induced primary fermentation with two specialized yeast strains known for their ability to maintain color and produce intense flavors. After fermentation, the wine was pressed into a combination of new and one year old French oak barrels where it matured for 22 months. Only 494 cases were produced.
Manzoni Estate Vineyard was founded in 1999, with the planting of the lush Home Vineyard which is located on six acres in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands. It is here, amidst the beauty of central California's Salinas Valley, that the Manzoni Family along with winemaker David Coventry produce a premium brand founded on our family name. It is our hope that you enjoy consuming these artful vintages as much as we enjoy creating them.
RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

This smells fairly vegetal and stemmy with bizarrely sweet vegetal tones recalling roasted parsnip, canned truffle and dried apples, with a spicy top note. Smooth on entry, this is very nicely structured and really well balanced. A fairly large scaled wine with red fruit and a fine transparent feel allowing the briary, earthy elements to add detail in the mouth. A touch clumsy on the back end, this kind of falls apart on the finish. There is a nice echo of fruit that manages to hold on for sometime. The wine making shows some potential, but this is a swing and a miss. 85pts
Food Pairings for Manzoni Santa Lucia Highlands Home Vineyard Syrah
The 2009 Manzoni Syrah’s cherry, plum, and berry fruit characters dominate the nose, backed by an Hermitage-like whiff of white pepper. On the palate, lush red berry and game flavors are backed by moderate acidity and medium-weight tannins. While delicious now, it will certainly reward a few years of careful cellaring.
