Man O' War Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Waiheke Island 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

We time the picking of the Sauvignon blanc based on the acidity of the grapes so we are looking for a vibrant core of acid to provide the focus and length to the wine. The solids in the ferment provide tannin structure and a pleasing grapefruit finish which enhances the length. In a cool year such as 2011 we promote the acid and tannin to allow a small amount of natural residual sugar to remain in the wine providing texture and a little weight. The Sémillon adds another dimension to the wine and gives it an ability to age far more gracefully than a 100% Sauvignon blanc blend. This 2011 is fresh and fragrant with mineral chalk characters, citrus notes and hints of tropical fruits.

Located at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, in New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf, Man O’ War boasts a pristine and beautiful spread of coastal hillsides with high cliffs and stunning beaches. This rugged and beautiful coastline was “Discovered” in 1769 by Captain James Cook, and today we take responsibility for maintaining its beauty and integrity for future generations. Under our family’s stewardship for almost 30 years we first introduced grapes to Man O’War in 1993, firm in the belief that world class wines could be produced here. Since then we have carefully selected and developed almost 90 individual pockets of Man O’ War’s hillsides for wine growing, each chosen for the unique and exceptional qualities they bring to our wines. Today 150 acres of vines are strategically placed around Man O’War’s 4500 acres, enhancing its intrinsic beauty. Meticulous design ensures that the distinct soil profile and microclimate of each block is used to best advantage with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities selected to match the specific terroir on offer. At Man O’War an exceptional and passionate team of people come together to bring you unique world class wines that reflect the distinctive treasure of land from which they come. Our winemaking team possesses broad and extensive experience and we pride ourselves on fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Man O’ War wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture. Our Flagship Black Label Range of Gravestone Sauvignon Semillon, Valhalla Chardonnay, Dreadnought Syrah and Ironclad Bordeaux Blend convey layers of complexity, structure and ageing potential. Each we have lovingly named to reflect their history and exceptional sense of place. While our White Label range expresses varietal character and fruit vibrancy in a classical style. Man O’ War has always charted its own course and we hope you will find pleasure in our wines and join us on our journey. Read less

Fresh herb, nettles and gooseberry characters, creating a wine that is fresh and crisp in a dry fruity style.Taking their name from the bay where James Cook came to anchor during his first voyage around the islands of New Zealand in 1769, Man O War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks on Waiheke Island.Grapes: 96% Sauvignon Blanc 4% SemillonRegion: NZ / Waiheke Island / Man O War BayMaker: Duncan McTavishNotes: This estate grown Waiheke Sauvignon Blanc exhibits fresh herb, nettles and gooseberry characters and contains a splash of Semillon creating a wine that is fresh and crisp in a dry fruity style. The Sauvignon Blanc gives the pungency to the aromas and the Semillon adds a remarkable chalky minerality to the wine which, over time, will develop into a wonderfully toasted muesli/tropical fruit character.Serve: At 10-12c with rich and heavy sauces or alternatively with very fresh fish dishes.ABV: 13%
