Man O' War "Ironclad" Bordeaux Blend Waiheke Is 2009
Full of sweet ripe fruit with lifted aromas of crushed red berries and darker cassis, hints of floral perfume with tobacco and cedar. The palate is vibrant, exuding ripe fruit and a rich texture finishing with supple fine grained tannins. The 2009 Ironclad shows great fruit accessibility with a powerful structure coated in luxuriant fruit, supple yet powerful it is an engaging wine in its youth that will reward patient cellaring revealing a refined structure and greater complexity with age.
AUD$27. I tasted this at a 'NZ in a glass' promotional event, and was actually planning on avoiding it until literally being pulled over to the Man O War stand by their lovely promotions manager (can't say no to a lady, especially one bearing drinks!). A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine had a lovely bouquet of blackcurrants, peppery red berries and black plum flesh. A medium+ bodied wine with ripe acidity and chocolatey tannins. Dark fruit flavours, a dash of pepper and a hint of bay leaf. However, as enjoyable as the journey had been, the finish was rather disappointing because it ended wayy too soon. Drink now.
