Man O' War "Ironclad" Bordeaux Blend Waiheke Is 2008
The 2008 Ironclad is about 1/2 Merlot, 1/4 Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and Petit Verdot and a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is built with the Merlot component providing the softness and berry fruit aromas, the Cabernet Franc adding earthy notes and a sinewy structure. Malbec brings intense floral aromas while the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon add density.A complex aroma profile of cassis and red summer berries, earthy undertones with a touch of floral fragrance, tarmac and leather all framed within a mix of predominantly French oak and a small component of American oak.
AUD$27. I tasted this at a 'NZ in a glass' promotional event, and was actually planning on avoiding it until literally being pulled over to the Man O War stand by their lovely promotions manager (can't say no to a lady, especially one bearing drinks!). A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine had a lovely bouquet of blackcurrants, peppery red berries and black plum flesh. A medium+ bodied wine with ripe acidity and chocolatey tannins. Dark fruit flavours, a dash of pepper and a hint of bay leaf. However, as enjoyable as the journey had been, the finish was rather disappointing because it ended wayy too soon. Drink now.
